Last FebruaryI made mentionof a project I had in the works regarding my desire to encourage Al Gore to run for re-election as *our* President. Of course, by “re-election” and “our” I am referring to the fact that by popular vote, the people of the United States of America elected Al Gore to be their next President. However, it’s not by popular vote that the president is elected, and instead by a somewhat complex system referred to as theElectoral College.
At the time I had a much grander plan as to what I wanted this to be. And then I realized it doesn’t need to be grand, or spectacular, or anything else. Instead, it needs to be simple, direct, to the point, and it needs to speak the truth.
As I’ve pointed out, the above quote is from Professor Lawrence Lessig [Blog,Wikipedia] ofStanford Law School. Over the last few months I have been fortunate enough to develop a correspondence with Professor Lessig, gaining his advice on projects that embrace the ideals presented in his book,Free Culture. It was within one of our more recent threads that I decided to ask him how he felt regarding Al Gore running for re-election as our president. Obviously he has strong feelings towards the notion that this would be a very good thing. I too feel this would be a very good thing. But that’s not where I want to place the focus of this site, at least not right at the moment.
Last Friday, June 16th, I was able to gain access into the local theatre playing “An Inconvenient Truth”. I knew before attending this film that this was something that I REALLY needed to see. But I had no idea just how important this film was until I left the theatre and knew for the very first time, we need to make some changes, and we need to make them in a hurry. The material presented is factual. Tens of thousands of scientists from every field of related study stand behind the material presented, and suggest in no uncertain terms, we are in a SERIOUS crisis, and we have very little time in which we can make the changes necessary to make a difference.
Watching this film is THE MOST IMPORTANT thing you can do this weekend. The film doesn’t push and pull you emotionally in a million different directions. It simply states the facts, and presents REAL things that we can all do RIGHT NOW that will give us a chance to save our planet, as well as our own lives. In other words, this isn't your typical politician making typical politician-like speaches. This is someone who truly understands that we are in a crisis, and someone who truly cares about making a difference.
Please go and see this film. Please encourage others to see this film. There are links above that will gain you access to various items such as show times, a movie trailer, and a site where you can discuss these issues inside of a web-based forum. I would encourage all of you that read this, to take action by visiting these links, and to the see this film. And then lets all start working together to make the necessary changes such that we can ALL be a part of the solution. In fact, we all HAVE to be a part of the solution. There is simply no other way that this can work.
Thanks!
Sincerely,
M. David Peterson
